Why We Never Outgrow Back-to-School Excitement

Why We Never Outgrow the Excitement of Back to School

There's something magical about September that has nothing to do with pumpkin spice!

Do you remember that feeling? Walking down the school supply aisle, running your fingers over pristine notebooks with unbroken spines, picking out the perfect Trapper Keeper, testing pens to find the one that writes just right. The promise of fresh starts lived in those clean pages—pages without your crush's name scribbled and crossed out, without ten pages ripped because you needed to write a quick note to your friend.

Each year, I told myself: I will keep my binder organized. I will do all my homework on time. I will actually do the required reading—in fact, I will read ahead. I wouldn't lose my glasses or forget a banana in the bottom of my backpack until it turned into a science experiment.

"This year will be different. This year I'll be organized."

My Palm Pilot Lesson

My grandparents gave me a Palm Pilot in middle school. I was OVER THE MOON. I spent hours learning the little stroke language to enter information, meticulously adding my classes, notes, and homework assignments into that tiny screen. It was the future! It was organized! It was... completely wrong for how I actually worked.

Within days, I was back to my paper planner and mechanical pencil with the retractable eraser. The Palm Pilot sat in my desk drawer, a reminder that shiny and new doesn't always mean better. Just because something was exciting new technology didn't mean it met the moment.

September is the Real New Year

Forget January 1st—for me, September has always felt like the real fresh start. Maybe it's the changing season, the new outfits, the smell of fresh school supplies. Or maybe it's that deep-rooted rhythm we learned as kids—September means new beginnings, sharper focus, and the chance to get it right this time.

There was something magical about those first few weeks of school. The workload was manageable. I wasn't behind on homework yet. I didn't have more than I could handle. I could start fresh and take on the work one assignment and one new topic at a time. Everything felt possible.

"You're not behind on anything yet. You can start fresh."

As adults, I believe we carry that Back-to-School momentum forward. We feel it in the air, in the way the light changes, in our sudden urge to organize everything and start fresh. For entrepreneurs, September offers something even more powerful: the chance to hone our focus and see where we want to grow.

The Trap of September Ambition

But here's where I often went wrong. Every September, I'd promise myself I'd join three clubs AND a sport, take perfect notes, AND keep my locker organized like those girls who had color-coded everything. I wanted to transform into the most organized, most involved, most successful version of myself all at once.

Sound familiar? I do the same thing with my business. This September, I'm going to redesign my website AND launch a new service AND start a podcast AND finally get organized. Everything fails when we try to change everything at once.

Start Small, Win Big

What if I told you that something as simple as updating your templates could be the perfect back-to-school project for your business?

Think about it: What did your client onboarding emails look like a year ago? How has your business, brand, and voice evolved? Are the templates and response processes you created when you were just getting started still working for you?

Fresh templates are like those clean notebooks—they give you a chance to show up professionally, consistently, and authentically. They're your business equivalent of sharp pencils and unbroken crayons.

"Fresh templates are your business equivalent of sharp pencils and unbroken crayons."

Your Business Back-to-School Fresh Start

Instead of overwhelming yourself with a complete business overhaul, what if you focused on these manageable wins:

Audit your current templates • Client welcome emails • Discovery call follow-ups • Project proposals • Thank you messages

Update your voice and branding • Does your email signature match your current brand? • Are your forms asking the right questions? • Do your templates sound like you... now?

Test and refine • Send yourself your own welcome email • Walk through your client onboarding as if you're new • Ask a friend to review your discovery call process

Implement and celebrate • Roll out your fresh templates • Notice how much smoother everything feels • Celebrate your organized systems

The beauty is that you can tackle these one at a time, just like those early September assignments. You're not behind on anything yet. You can start fresh and build momentum as you go.

One of the things that brings me the most passion is being able to recreate that new school supply excitement for my clients. There's something magical about helping someone move from scattered to streamlined, from overwhelmed to organized.

It's like watching someone open a new Trapper Keeper all over again—everything has its place, everything works smoothly, and suddenly the work feels manageable again.
